Homers lead Bulldogs past South Boston, 15-3

Englehardt collected two triples and two RBIs in the win

Malden, MA - The Malden Bulldogs powered their way to victory over the South Boston Saints, winning by a score of 15-3.

Jonathan Pollard and Brad Tardugno highlighted the offensive explosion with home runs in the fifth inning. Also putting on a laser show was Bulldog third basemen Tom Englehardt. Englehardt finished the night going 3-for-4 with a double and two triples while collecting two RBIs. YBL Rookie and current Eastern Connecticut product, Hunter Caron continues to showcase his talent as he started in Centerfield and had a solid 2-for-3 night at the dish.

Malden started their 15 run, 14 hit attack in the second. With one out, Englehardt tripled into the right field corner and scored on Evan Tardugno's RBI ground out to second.

The Bulldogs would plate three in the third, courtesy of a RBI single to right from Brad Tardugno and the second triple by Englehardt that scored two.

After both Caron and Rob Mondello scored in the fourth inning, the Bulldog bats came alive in the fifth. With two outs and a runner at second, Malden would put up a nine spot to put the game out of reach. Caron reached via a walk and newcomer Gary Lunetta got aboard on a fielding error. That brought up Mondello. He promptly hit a ground ball to the short stop, who rushed his throw to first due to the hustle of both Lunetta and Mondello, and threw the ball away which allowed Evan Tardugno and Caron to score and Lunetta to reach third. Anthony Perry singled home Lunetta before Pollard launched a three run Home Run to left-center. Brian Duplissie doubled to left which allowed Brad Tardugno to demolish the baseball over the right-center fence for a two run Home Run. The ninth run came across when Evan Tardugno singled home Englehardt, who reached on a double to right-center.

That would be all the support that the Bulldog pitching staff would need. 2009 YBL Cy Young Award winner Jason Paul took the mound and tossed five innings of shutout baseball. He allowed the Saints to record just five hits as he struck out six and issued just one walk. Paul improves his 2010 record to 4-0 while lowering his ERA to a miniscule 0.33.

Chris Dion, an upcoming senior at Saint Josephs College of Maine, pitched a scoreless sixth and Framingham State's Charlie Spear allowed three runs, one earned, in the seventh. Both Dion and Spear struck out two batters in their innings of work respectively.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday, July 1, 2010 when they take on YBL powerhouse and division rival Somerville Albrandis. Game time is set for 8pm at Maplewood Park, located behind Malden Catholic High School.
